2007 was the worst season for sharking we have experienced largely, we think, because the water temperature change we normally see around 16 miles offshore was much further out & less marked than usual. Consequently, we had to steam for longer & found fewer fish when we got there. In a record 24 trips, we only managed 38 Blues to 112lb, well below the long-term average of 4-5 fish per day. Tags were set in 30 Blues & 2 Tope. To date, two Blues (Nos. 26062 & 26060) & one Tope (No. 21635) have been recaptured. The Tope was washed up on Newgale Beach better than a year after we boated it, so its death was nothing to do with the tag. It must have travelled much further than the 6 miles recorded.
